The WiFi on campus can be unreliable, and imposes annoying restrictions. A way to get around that, and create a network that has comparable speed and coverage would be to use a mesh network. This would allow phones and laptops to have access to the internet and spread the network at the sometime. Simul (Latin for together, so fancy) Tech is the name of the venture that plans on implementing this solution.
Great Idea Matthew! I definitely think this has potential, however, It raises some important concerns. When you mention phones, I'm assuming you're making this cross platform (android, OS, etc). How would you deal with the security risks involved with this? Would you mandate that all phones participating in this software install an additional security software?
ReplyDeleteConceptually the only requirement would be to have the piece of additional software mentioned in the video. In addition to helping propagate the network, it would help serve as a buffer to isolate the user from transmitting anything dangerous to other people. Of course this is just based off what I've found from limited research so an actual product could be different.
DeleteMatthew,
ReplyDeleteI know that I always had problems with UF wifi when I lived on campus. My preferred method (if I need to use the database sources) has always been to be off campus and then do the off campus sign-in. When I lived in the dorms, the wifi would cause my computer to crash and sometimes e-learning wouldn't work the night that a quiz was due. I like your idea, but am a bit confused on it myself. In the next elevator pitch, perhaps try breaking it down without so much jargon.
Here is the link to my elevator pitch if you want to check it out:

Hey Matthew,
ReplyDeleteThe UF wifi is something that not only I have found to be a problem but also many people that I know find it to be a pain. IT even discourages me from wanting to study on campus because it seems to kick me out of the network. I love your idea and believe that it would be very successful on campus and would benefit all of the students.
